TNG Active Optics System

This schematic gives an idea of the control of the three mirrors of the TNG. The shape of M1 is optimized by 78 actuators according to the analysis of wave-front aberrations. M2 has alignment capabilities controlled by an original mechanical solution based on a hexapod system, while M3 is provided with high frequency tilting possibilities both for compensation of guiding errors and for partial removal of the tilt component of the atmospheric seeing.
